Airline Fees for most US Domestic Airline Flights

Airline Fees are a fact of life (hastened by $140/barrel oil), it is important that everyone take into account airline fees while shopping for airfare. To that end we have compiled a handy comparison list of U.S. domestic airline fees.

AIRLINE BAGGAGE FEES FOR MAJOR US AIRLINES

AIRTRAN AIRWAYS BAGGAGE FEES
First Checked Bag: $15 each way for all economy-class reservations.
Second Checked Bag: $25 each way for all economy-class reservations.
Who's Exempt: Business-class travelers and active military personnel traveling with ID and official orders. Disabled travelers may check a wheelchair for no charge.
Excess Bags: $50 per piece beyond your first two checked bags. Special fees may apply for sporting equipment.
Overweight Bags: $49 for bags weighing 51 to 70 pounds, and $79 for bags weighing 71 to 100 pounds. Suitcases that weigh more than 100 pounds are not permitted.
Oversized Bags: $49 for bags with dimensions totaling 62 to 70 inches, and $79 for bags with dimensions of 71 to 80 inches. Bags larger than 80 inches are not permitted.

ALASKA AIRLINES HORIZON AIR BAGGAGE FEES
First Checked Bag: For economy-class travel purchased prior to May 1, 2010, $15 each way per bag. For economy-class travel purchased on or after May 1, 2010, for travel on or after June 16, 2010, $20 each way per bag.
Second Checked Bag: For economy-class travel purchased prior to May 1, 2010, $25 each way per bag. For economy-class travel purchased on or after May 1, 2010, for travel on or after June 16, 2010, $20 each way per bag.
Who's Exempt: First-class passengers, MVP Gold Mileage Plan members, active-duty military personnel, customers traveling solely within the state of Alaska or to Guadalajara or Mexico City, and passengers making international connections to other airlines (as long as a ticketing and baggage agreement is in effect between Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air and the other airline).
Excess Bags: $20 for a third bag, and $50 for each bag thereafter.
Overweight Bags: $50 for bags weighing 51 to 100 pounds. Heavier bags are not permitted.
Oversized Bags: $50 for bags measuring 63 to 80 inches; $75 for bags measuring 81 to 115 inches. Larger bags are not permitted.

AMERICAN AIRLINES BAGGAGE FEES
First Checked Bag: $15 each way for economy-class flights within the United States, U.S.V.I., Puerto Rico and Canada booked before August 13, 2009. $20 for tickets to these destinations purchased between August 14, 2009 and January 31, 2010. For flights within the United States, U.S.V.I. or Puerto Rico booked on or after February 1, 2010, the fee has risen to $25. Fees for flights between these destinations and Canada will remain the same.
Second Checked Bag: $25 each way for economy-class flights within the United States, U.S.V.I., Puerto Rico and Canada booked before August 13, 2009. $30 for tickets to these destinations purchased between August 14, 2009 and January 31, 2010. For flights within the United States, U.S.V.I. or Puerto Rico booked on or after February 1, 2010, the fee has risen to $35. Fees for flights between these destinations and Canada will remain the same. $50 each way for economy-class tickets purchased on or after September 14, 2009, between the U.S., Puerto Rico or the U.S.V.I. and the following countries: Belgium, England, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.
Who's Exempt: First- or business-class travelers, customers who purchase full-fare economy-class tickets, customers flying to destinations beyond those mentioned above, select AAdvantage and oneworld Alliance members, and military passengers on active duty. Other exemptions apply; see link below for details.
Excess Bags: $100 per piece for third, fourth and fifth checked bags; $200 per piece for any additional bags. Exceptions may apply for international itineraries.
Overweight Bags: $50 for each bag weighing 51 to 70 pounds; $100 for each bag weighing 71 to 100 pounds. Bags over 100 pounds are not permitted.
Oversized Bags: $150 for bags measuring 62 to 115 inches. Larger bags are not permitted.

CONTINENTAL AIRLINES BAGGAGE FEES
First Checked Bag: For economy-class flights within the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S.V.I. and Canada purchased on or after January 9, 2010, $23 each way when prepaid on the Continental Web site or $25 when paid at the airport. For tickets to these destinations purchased between October 2, 2009 and January 8, 2010, $18 (online) or $20 (at the airport). For tickets to these destinations purchased before October 2, 2009, $15 (online) or $20 (at the airport).
Second Checked Bag: For tickets purchased on or after January 9, 2010, $32 each way for economy-class flights within the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S.V.I. and Canada when prepaid at the Continental Web site, or $35 at the airport. For tickets to these destinations purchased between October 2, 2009 and January 8, 2010, $27 (online) or $30 (at the airport). For tickets to these destinations purchased before October 2, 2009, $25 (both online and at the airport). For flights to Mexico, Central or South America, or the Caribbean, a fee of $27 each way (prepaid online) or $30 (at the airport) applies to tickets purchased on or after October 2, 2009. For tickets to these destinations purchased before October 2, 2009, a $25 fee applies (both online and at the airport). For flights to Europe, a $45 fee applies when the bag is prepaid at the Continental Web site; the fee rises to $50 for bags checked at the airport.
Who's Exempt: EliteAccess customers, OnePass Elite members, customers on full-fare economy tickets, active-duty military personnel, and passengers headed to international destinations besides the ones listed above.
Excess Bags: $100 per excess bag for travel to and from Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Latin America and the United States. $150 per excess bag for travel to and from other international destinations.
Overweight Bags: $50 per bag weighing 51 to 70 pounds. Heavier bags will not be accepted.
Oversized Bags: For travel to and from Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Latin America and the United States: $100 per bag that exceeds 62 inches; bags exceeding 115 inches are not permitted. For travel to and from other international destinations: $150 per bag between 62 and 80 inches; $300 per bag between 81 and 115 inches; bags exceeding 115 inches are not permitted.

DELTA NORTHWEST BAGGAGE FEES
First Checked Bag: For tickets purchased on or after January 5, 2010, $23 each way for travel within the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and the U.S.V.I. when prepaid online at the Delta Web site (or $25 at the airport). For tickets to the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S.V.I. purchased between July 16, 2009 and January 4, 2010, $15 (online) or $20 (at the airport). The above fees also apply to Canada flights for tickets purchased between September 19, 2009 and January 4, 2010.
Second Checked Bag: For tickets purchased on or after January 5, 2010 for travel within the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S.V.I. and Canada, $32 each way when the fee is paid online at the Delta Web site or $35 at the airport. For tickets purchased on or after July 16, 2009, $25 each way for travel within the United States, Puerto Rico and U.S.V.I. when fee is paid online at the Delta Web site (or $30 at the airport). The above fees also apply to flights to Canada or Latin America (except for Brazil) for tickets purchased on or after September 19, 2009. For flights between the U.S. and Europe, $50 each way.
Who's Exempt: First- or business-class passengers, SkyMiles Medallion and WorldPerks Elite members, passengers on full-fare economy-class tickets, active-duty military personnel, and some international travelers.
Excess Bags: For travel within the United States, U.S.V.I. and Puerto Rico: $125 for a third checked bag and $200 each for bags 4 through 10. For travel outside these areas: $200 for a third checked bag, $350 each for bags four and five, and $600 each for bags 6 through 10.
Overweight Bags: For travel within the United States, U.S.V.I. and Puerto Rico: $90 for each bag weighing 51 to 70 pounds, and $175 for each bag weighing 71 to 100 pounds. For travel outside these areas: $150 for each bag weighing 51 to 70 pounds, and $300 for each bag weighing 71 to 100 pounds. Bags weighing over 100 pounds are not permitted regardless of itinerary.
Oversized Bags: $175 for each bag measuring 63 to 80 inches. Larger bags are not permitted.

FRONTIER AIRLINES BAGGAGE FEES
First Checked Bag: $20 each way for economy-class travel within the United States booked on or after September 8, 2009. $15 for tickets booked before this date.
Second Checked Bag: $30 each way for economy-class travel within the United States booked on or after September 8, 2009. $25 for tickets booked before this date.
Who's Exempt: Summit, Ascent and AirTran A+ Elite passengers; passengers traveling on Classic or Classic Plus fares; international travelers; and active-duty military personnel.
Excess Bags: $50 for each bag beyond your first two.
Overweight Bags: $75 for each bag weighing more than 50 pounds. Bags weighing more than 100 pounds are not permitted.
Oversized Bags: $75 for each bag measuring more than 62 inches. Bags measuring more than 110 inches are not permitted.

JETBLUE BAGGAGE FEES
First Checked Bag: Free.
Second Checked Bag: $30 for travelers who booked on or after June 2, 2009. $20 each way for travelers who booked before that date.

For tickets purchased before this date, $30 each way (with a $5 discount for bags checked online). For flights from North America to Europe or India booked on or after September 30, 2009, the fee is $45 for bags checked online and $50 for bags checked at the airport. A second bag is free for Europe or India flights booked before this date. For flights from the U.S. or Canada to the Caribbean or Mexico booked on or after September 30, 2009, the fee is $27 for bags checked online and $30 for bags checked at the airport. A second bag is free for Caribbean or Mexico flights booked before this date.
Who's Exempt: First- or business-class travelers; Global ServicesSM, Mileage Plus 1K, Premier Executive, Premier, Premier Associate, or Star Alliance Gold or Silver members; active-duty military personnel (and/or dependents) with ID and traveling on orders; and passengers flying to destinations besides those listed above.
Excess Bags: $125 each for third and fourth bags, and $200 for each subsequent bag.
Overweight Bags: $125 per bag weighing 51 to 100 pounds.
Oversized Bags: $175 per bag measuring 62 to 115 inches. Bags larger than 115 inches, or with any single dimension exceeding 62 inches, will not be accepted.

US AIRWAYS BAGGAGE FEES
First Checked Bag: For all economy-class flights (except to Europe, South America or the Middle East) booked on or after January 18, 2010, the fee is $23 (when booked online) or $25 (at the airport) each way. For flights booked between August 26, 2009 and January 17, 2010, the fee is $20 (online) or $25 (at the airport). For flights booked before August 26, 2009, the fee is $15 (online) or $20 (at the airport).
Second Checked Bag: For all economy-class flights (except to Europe, South America or the Middle East) booked on or after January 18, 2010, the fee is $32 (when booked online) or $35 (at the airport) each way. For tickets to these destinations booked between August 26, 2009 and January 17, 2010, the fee is $30 (online) or $35 (at the airport). For tickets to these destinations booked before August 26, 2009, the fee is $25 (online) or $30 (at the airport. For flights to Europe booked on or after August 26, 2009, a $50 fee applies for a second checked bag when prepaid online; the fee is $55 for second bags checked at the airport. For travelers who booked flights to Europe prior to August 26, 2009, a second checked bag is free.
Who's Exempt: Dividend Miles Preferred members, Star Alliance Silver and Gold status members, passengers traveling to and from Europe or Asia, unaccompanied minors, First Class and Envoy passengers, and active U.S. military personnel with ID.
